Watering New Lawns
First Week: Keep sod soil moist at all times. During dry spells, you should water more frequently for shorter durations.
Ex. 2-3 times in the morning and 2-3 times in the afternoon, between 5 minutes and 20 minutes each duration.
After the roots are established you can reduce the frequency of watering and increase the volume.
Ex. 1-2 time a day, between 30 minutes and 60 minutes.
Note: If you are getting gaps between each sod strings then that means they are shrinking due to a lack of water.
To see if the newly installed sod is staying moist enough, lift up a corner of the sod and check if the underside of the roll is glistening wet. If there is water standing on the topsoil, that means the lawn is receiving too much water.
Important Mowing Tip
Due to the aggressive growth habit of a newly installed lawn, special attention must be made to regular mowings (rule of thumb is never remove more than 1/3 of the total grass height at time of mowing).
*Note 1: A 2" mowing height should not be allowed to grow taller than 3" at a time of mowing.
*Note 2: This rule of mowing also applies to newly installed lawns and will usually require a mow within the first week and sometimes subsequent mowings every 4 to 5 days during the first month after installation.
